Running Gags

Today’s Jimmy O’Hair comic strip has Jimmy asking Cabo for help in the romance section of the store, because the romance book a customer wants is not on the shelf. Cabo offers an alternative selection in only the way Cabo can, but it ends up being a totally different book than a romance book – What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Previously, there was a Jimmy O’Hair comic strip where Cabo gave a woman the wrong book – Word Power Made Easy. This is a running gag in the strip, i.e. Jimmy calling Cabo for help in the romance section, only to have to cover for him after he makes a blunder with his book selection. Recurring gags in comic strips are a way to see favorite characters explore a humorous topic again and again, but with different results. Whether it’s Calvin building snowmen in “Calvin and Hobbes”, Garfield craving lasagna in “Garfield”, or Snoopy yanking Linus’ blanket in “Peanuts”, these are gags that we see over and over again, but they still make us laugh because of the different twists.
