An ancillary character in the Jimmy O’Hair comic strip, Donny Dumpcake, makes his debut today and he will recur from time to time. Donny is a nightclub bouncer who keeps a “tight rope” policy, meaning it’s difficult to get by him unless you’re “on the list” and he almost never cracks a smile. Does that sound like the bouncer that may control the door at the nightclub near you? Anyway, Donny also is known around town for his immense talent for baking, characterized by his award winning “dumpcakes.” Of course this is also a play on words, because he is effectively “dumpcaking” most guys who show up to the nightclub and want to get past him, as most are sent home or realize they’re never getting in due to the excessive wait. However, don’t count out seeing in the future some of Donny’s baking prowess behind the macho exterior, because he is “Donny Dumpcake” after all. As for Jimmy, he will go to great lengths to get by Donny’s tough door policy now and into the future. Will he ever get on the list and make his way inside this exclusive club or will he always get “dumpcaked” in the end? That’s why you must follow the comic strip to see all of Jimmy’s adventures!

On this Memorial Day holiday in the United States, many of us gather for parties, picnics, beach outings, or whatever else may be happening on this “unofficial” launch of the summer season. However, it’s always appropriate to recall the true meaning behind Memorial Day, an observance to remember the brave heroes who sacrificed their lives to preserve the nation’s democracy and American ideals. There is not a comic strip posted today for Jimmy O’Hair, but rather a simple B&W tribute to all the men and women in U.S. history who have lost their lives fighting for the nation. Jimmy is saluting all of them, reflecting the significance by standing next to a tombstone and the U.S. flag. The regular Jimmy O’Hair comic strip will return to its current three day cycle on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but for today, it is something different. Hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day Holiday!

Today’s Jimmy O’Hair comic is about Facebook, the omnipresent social network. How many of us do our interacting with family and friends on Facebook these days? If it weren’t for status updates, a lot of us would miss out on things happening with our friends and family. You know, like how they’re building their empire in Mafia wars or collecting animals in Farmville. And now, “to like” something has taken on a whole new context with the advent of Facebook. You almost expect to see that Facebook “thumbs up” logo appear when you say you like something in real life! Facebook is also continually evolving to the point where it’s hard to keep up. So how many people really like the new timeline? You can see from the comic with Jimmy and Lola attached to this blog a little humor about Facebook’s changes. In a period of just a few years, Facebook has gone from a small Harvard University social network to a global juggernaut certain to eclipse a billion users. Of course, most of you know this story from the movie The Social Network, based on the bestselling book The Accidental Billionaire. Facebook also is very important to Jimmy O’Hair too! There is a “Jimmy O’Hair” page on Facebook where you can “like” Jimmy and get the latest comic strips and news about the strip as well. So if you’re not already following, click the Facebook link on this page or just go to “Jimmy O’Hair” the next time you’re on Facebook. The Jimmy O’Hair strip on the site today featuring Brooke and Jimmy also happens to coincide with Facebook’s IPO on the NASDAQ, which is happening right now and making news around the globe. Brooke is like a lot of people out there who has thousands of “friends” and thousands of “likes” on Facebook. Of course, Jimmy has to look at this from a logical perspective. It just goes to show Facebook is a part of our lives, now and into the future … whether we “like” it or not!

Today’s Jimmy O’Hair comic strip has Jimmy asking Cabo for help in the romance section of the store, because the romance book a customer wants is not on the shelf. Cabo offers an alternative selection in only the way Cabo can, but it ends up being a totally different book than a romance book – What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Previously, there was a Jimmy O’Hair comic strip where Cabo gave a woman the wrong book – Word Power Made Easy. This is a running gag in the strip, i.e. Jimmy calling Cabo for help in the romance section, only to have to cover for him after he makes a blunder with his book selection. Recurring gags in comic strips are a way to see favorite characters explore a humorous topic again and again, but with different results. Whether it’s Calvin building snowmen in “Calvin and Hobbes”, Garfield craving lasagna in “Garfield”, or Snoopy yanking Linus’ blanket in “Peanuts”, these are gags that we see over and over again, but they still make us laugh because of the different twists. There will be some other running gags in Jimmy O’Hair that you’ll probably pick up on, but this is one you’re seeing right away … all in the name of romance!

Don’t most of us love the thought of traveling? Whether it is to explore a brand-new place or re-visit a familiar haunt, it is a way to stoke our imagination and fulfill our desires by venturing out of our daily existence to a different locale. And if we happen to score some good photos to post up on social networks afterward, even better! Just because he’s a cartoon character doesn’t mean Jimmy doesn’t have the traveling bug as well. As today’s comic strip shows, he’s in New York City. Now what place to most of the world epitomizes America more than New York City? Being in the Big Apple is great fodder for comedic adventures, and this Jimmy O’Hair strip involving Jimmy’s search for a souvenir is just the tip of the iceberg. Jimmy and the gang will have times when they are traveling to different places around the globe, because it’s a way to show humorous episodes in familiar vacation spots or in places we’ve dreamed of going ourselves. Jimmy in Paris? Who knows! Guess we’ll have to wait and see with future strips if Jimmy comes home with a Mona Lisa key ring or an Eiffel Tower room deodorizer.
